Nå er jeg tilbake.

I'm back! Yay!

Maybe nobody noticed I was gone. I had almost forgotten the existence of this blog. I didn't recall how to get here. But thank God for Google. And a bit of logic reminded me of the password I forgot to write down somewhere.

Weird isn't it. Life is full of pin codes and passwords. 10 years ago, I just barely understood how to set up an email account. Now life without them is unthinkable. For some.

I found a new purpose. To blog about Norway. This new chapter in my life was nowhere clear at the beginning of the year, but now seems perfectly right. Being here. I am grateful for the chance to live here, excitedly learning more about Norwegian society and finding my place in it, as I am determined to master the language by early next year.

Language is one challenge I always can rise to. Yay! It brings such marvelous benefits. Like being able to order things and get them. Or respond to others and know by their reaction that you have understood. Nothing more rewarding than success, unless you count the joy of getting there.

I came across it while clearing out my stuff.

So I tried a couple healing meditations on the oil spill. I visualised a happy Hawksbill turtle surfacing in an oil-free stretch of sea. And I sent out healing thoughts to contain the spread of the spill.

You may laugh. In fact, I'm glad if you do. It feels a lot better than cursing and blaming and complaining about BP.
Hugs for Haiti, Israel, Gaza, Jamaica.

Hurra!

I joined the local library on Friday and spent the weekend with Agatha Christie and Arthur Clarke. Some things are timeless. Birthday greetings from old friends reminded me that friendship is one of them.

Then there's the chance for new things. Like a friendship in the making with the landlady and her daughter. They rang the bell and invited me to lunch. At 1:45--I'm good with numbers when I check. Hurray! I love a rainy day invitation. After all, I do know better, and have known for a long time.

In the seventies I boycotted deo sprays with FC-whatever. If you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything, I tell myself, and wonder vaguely why I haven't put my mind to finding a way past crude oil.

I guess I am too caught up in my own little cosmos of every day cares to take a good look at where I am going. I am a dreamer, a high-flyer, I soar. But sometimes its good to touch ground in between. Where am I really?

Hugs for Haiti, Jamaica, Gaza, Israel.

Thank goodness for the distraction of war, poverty, crime and disaster. If it weren't for such things, I would have to clean up my own life a lot better. Unfortunately, there's no more getting around it when you move.

My husband calls me a messy when he wants to goad me. I resent that because although things do pile up, I always clear them away on a regular basis. Or so I thought until I started packing. But it's good to attack things with new resolve and get rid of everything but the essentials.

It reminds me of Tracy Chapman's song about Mountains of things. And I don't even own that much. But compared to the world's poorest... I guess everything is relative. The German head of state steps down, then so does the Japanese PM two days later. Greece has chronic economic woes, a flare up gives the German government an excuse to raise taxes and cut public spending.

Hmmm. Sure, it could be part of the conspiracy to gain global dominance, establish some sinister "New World Order". But honestly, who cares? Let them eat cake. I have more pressing matters to tend to. For if the world situation is a reflection of my state of mind, then boy do I have a lot of work to do. On myself.

But I knew that anyway, right? Hugs for Haiti, Jamaica, Israel and Gaza. Trouble spots are all over; starting at my own front door.

That's what life is like for me. But I love roller coaster rides, so it's fine. And everything that's changing is changing in the direction I want it to be. If things were always up, I'd never get a chance to feel the shelter of the valleys.

Take Oprah for instance. For over two decades she was on top and one only heard good things about her. Mostly. Now she's going down, stepping down perhaps because the time is right, and suddenly a book appears which shreds her. The aging lion is prey for malicious scavengers.

I don't know the truth of anybody's life except my own. It's not for me to judge other people. I'm just the clown enjoying the ride. Yay!
Hugs for Haiti!

Ha! I was pretty shocked when I did the first mock test a couple weeks ago and landed a CEF B2. When I registered for the test, the assessor told me I needed at least B1 to get any points. I had estimated myself to be A1/A2.

So I spent the better part of two weeks swotting for the exam, learning as much as I could in this short space of brain. And I also began to appreciate the language more. Yay! I really love French. I have lost the barrier in my brain that kept me from enjoying it before. I can do anything I put my mind to!

And that's more valuable than any number of points for Canadian immigration. Yay! Hugs for Haiti.

Oh yeah, the test was harrowing, but okay. I'll get more points from it than I need. Thanks to M. Hohwald and his colleague Catherine who invigilated and did my orals with me.

Jetzt kann ich tatsächlich etwas mehr Französisch. Hurra.

Marie Dixon Frischhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14847100396891455607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7253173705978194838.post-41474152001211485502010-05-24T01:32:00.004-05:002010-05-24T02:32:33.664-05:00Force/ Gezwungen"You have to be hospitalised immediately. Your blood test results are terrible." The voice of the doctor crackled on my mobile phone.

"No way," I responded just as firmly. I was in the middle of doing my taxes. Into my productive and hopeful Friday morning came the thunderbolt of this judgement.

My blood levels haven't been normal for years. And the last place I need to be is in hospital, where they have access to ever more sophisticated investigations and exotic resistant bugs that my "low" white cell count might leave me vulnerable to. They would kill me. They would bleed me to death, poke, prod, tweak and tug at me until the fragile thread broke.

I know! Been there, done that, learned all the insider tricks and experienced them first hand from both sides. One reason I gave up medicine was that the overwhelming force of system makes it hard to stand up for individual rights. But those are what I must strive for. For myself and others, as far as I can. Hugs for Haiti!

One is forced to conform to the norm. But variation is the stuff of innovation and evolution. It is my duty to be different, though basically the same. I may be powerless to resist forced hospitalisation, imprisonment, or whatever else greater powers might force on me. But they can't force me to believe in what they do or be like them. My mind is force-free. Yipee!

It's the same in German and English. It was only when I heard an older woman hiss it to herself yesterday that I realised I haven't used it for a while. I used to use it constantly. Mostly in negative self talk like that elderly woman.

She stopped in the middle of the street to berate herself, or some absent person, for something he or she had done, presumably at some time , anywhere from a minute to 70-80 years past, from the look of her. It might have been senility, I reasoned, once I had ascertained that she wasn't addressing me.

Or just the plain ole everyday human madness of habitually putting ourselves and others down. Whatever. I appreciated the brief, spontaneuos glimpse of her subconscious mind. It made me realise all that negative self talk has been absent from my mind for quite some time. Yay!!! True progress lies in the silence.

Was war denn los? Scheinbar nichts.

Hugs for Haiti.Marie Dixon Frischhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14847100396891455607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7253173705978194838.post-40802264357496930432010-05-20T00:10:00.005-05:002010-05-20T00:41:22.621-05:00Divine mind/ wiess ich nichtHugs for Haiti.

My life is a mixture of practical, hands-on progression and mystical, spirutual events. One side of me embraces cognitive behavioural science and is good at applying it. The other side opens itself to the whims of God, the Universe or that unknown, indefinable reality that informs and moulds the passage of life.

A book by Püttjer and Schnierda, German employment experts, helped me review my professional profile and appreciate the value of my life experience. I reviewed my strengths--and weaknesses, to a lesser extent--with evidence-based, concrete examples from my work history. The evidence is irrefutable: I have done and can do a lot!

An essay from SelfGrowth.com on messages from a goddess channelled by someone named Lena Lees inspired me to marvel about life. With the attitude of an appreciative observer, I immediately found more inner peace and joy. The combination of the practical-concrete and the mystical-spiritual input have blown my mind, yet again.

I have a really strong mind. It's good when it gets blown ever so often. Because, despite its merits, my mind is limited and limiting. When I let it go (Puff, or boom, depending on the circumstances) I catch a glimpse of wondrous possibilities. And I become more of what I have the potential to be: divine!

Hugs for Haiti!

I've had a Eureka moment this morning. Actually, it's the result of a process coming together, lots of little steps, faithfully followed, have brought me here. But that's a whole story, at least a book or two.

How to put into words the essence of what I have seen?

I have a dream. It is my task to help people adjust to the increased mobility and migration pressures that lie ahead. I think we are being prepared. At least, I have been preparing. I don't know its nature, or when it will happen, but I sense our world is approaching a quantum leap of radical proportions.

One of the things I can do is help people, children primarily, gear themselves for such change, find the resources to approach it humbly and deal with it masterfully. That's what my life has been about. It sounds simple, trivial, maybe even weird, but I have been moving around for decades, centuries, millenia even, if you count the 2000 jump. And I know a thing or few about adaptation. Yay! Hurray for the human race!

Glaubt mir! Oder nicht, es ist auch egal. Schönen Tag Welt!Marie Dixon Frischhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14847100396891455607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7253173705978194838.post-9730388445221893232010-05-18T01:20:00.003-05:002010-05-18T01:38:57.470-05:00Jobsuche/ On WorkI had the chance to sit in on a job interview as a passionate observer recently. Unaffected by the proceedings, I absorbed the subtle clues of human interaction that reveal so much. It was fascinating.

I knew the jobseeker would not be hired. I also recognised that this was not a bad thing. He wasn't the right man for the job and the company was not the right place for him. That's the whole point of job interviews: to check if something that seems right really is.

And it's perfectly fine to admit that the answer is no.

Often, we label misfits as failures, take rejection hard. But life--and work--is a constant process of trying and adjusting, changing and growing. We can't do everything. So why not be grateful for the better fit that's coming, instead of regretting the wrong thing that passed by? Not landing in the wrong place is as much a success as being in the right one.

Failures are just the dry runs on the way to success. I take them in stride and learn from them, glad for the chance to try something new for a while. Hugs for Haiti!

Marie Dixon Frischhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14847100396891455607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7253173705978194838.post-2980497007799904882010-05-17T04:00:00.005-05:002010-05-17T04:33:27.056-05:00Glücksschmied/ LuckJeg elsker Norge!

We left Hamburg in a rain cloud to soar in the sunshine on the way to Amsterdam. Holland was grey and wet, too. But as we crossed the North Sea, it was sunny ahead. We landed in Stavanger for the first time with warmer weather than we had left behind.

In the first awkward moments of getting to know the place, we couldn't find a parking space. Eventually we pulled into a parking lot. But we had no coins for the meter. Fan walked a few steps and found ten Kroner on the ground which covered parking for two hours.

Did we just get lucky, or did we make our own luck? Success gurus suggest luck is our own making. I like to believe that. It makes it easier to accept whatever luck brings, good or bad. It's up to me how I take life, or make it. And even the weather is feedback on where I'm at. We had a whole week of sunshine in Norway. A good omen!

Every ray of sunshine is joy, each drop of rain a boon. Hugs for Haiti.

Manche Leute sagen, man sieht und erlebt, was man sehen und erleben will.

At least mine does. And I've just had another bout of sickness. I have nothing against sickness. I earned a good living from it once upon a time. But my head used to be set on resisting and resenting sickness as an opponent, a rival for my territory.

When Fan got it, I looked at him darkly. I didn't want to catch it, but my mind was too cluttered and busy to counter the bug. Fan looked almost pleased when I finally succumbed. He seemed to need me to share what he felt.

He stayed home from work because his health insurance allowed it. I kept working because I always work at home and went out to work because I don't get paid if I don't. But going out helped. It took me out of the sick house. Students offered distraction and throat lozenges, laughter and fulfilment.

I'm better now. Not completely, but I'm grateful for the lessons from this bout of illness: the passing of dark thoughts and angry attitudes, the adding of another strain of bacteria to my internal flora club, and altogether for the miracle of life, love, health and healing.

I have learned to be nicer to myself, to cough more gently, to blow my nose softly (I was a huge honker before). Even at this age, habits can change. This cold has been another down step on the journey, but I'm grateful for every step of the way.
Hugs for Haiti.

As it rounded the corner I could just make out its peachy brown body as a dot on the horizon.

Was it hunting, or being hunted? I've never heard a wing on the wind quite like that. Maybe it was flying fast for the thrill of it.

I keep reading messages about clutter. All the gurus are suggesting spring cleaning. I know I need to do it. More than that, I long to keep myself clear in body mind and soul. Longterm. I can tell a new life is waiting for me as soon as I take care of the old stuff.

So I've tossed out a lot of the papers I collected over two years of English teaching. I'm passing them on to colleagues if anyone wants them. And we've taken out bags of clothes we no longer needed. I'm streamlining my life, slowly but surely. Maybe I can fly better that way. Not because someone tells me to, but just for the thrill of it.
Hugs for Haiti.

The songs aren't as clear and sweet as they were when I was younger. They're throaty, husky and slightly off key. But they're my songs.

As I told my profiler, I don't know if birds have superstars and Nobel prizes, but I know their songs brighten my day. And in the silence that follows the chirping, the joy of living deepens.

So I'll cast off my cloak of anxiety and the savour this pause in between. Yay! I still have a heap of stuff to do, unpaid labour, but hey, I do the things I love and learn to love whatever I do. Hugs for Haiti!

I'm not certain which six he meant. I did have a firm grasp of Spanish, German, Croatian and, of course, English at the time. I had also learned a bit of Polish for the time I spent working in a children's hospital in Krakow.

Ah yes, and I had already begun my eternal struggle with French. But six languages fluently is a bit of an exaggeration. It's not my fault Dr R hadn't checked his facts. The letter is dubiously full of double entendre and has typos--one line refers to me as 'he' which was pretty interesting. I never made use of that reference for serious purposes. Dr R meant well (I think!), but that letter didn't do either of us much of a service.

It did however impress my students. I made copies of old references to show them how it's done. I re-read the letters afterwards, to remind myself of the content.

Those referees didn't know the half of it. Ha! And the letters say a lot more about them than they do about me. But that's okay. It sounds good. And when other people make you sound good, it sounds better than you can ever make yourself sound...Know what I mean?

Oh, and as for the fluency thing, I do make a habit of speaking every language (except English, which I'm sure I stank at when I first began) fluently right from the start. I simply mimic the natives and act as if I know what I'm saying.

I'm pretty good at faking it. The one Chinese insult I know knocks the shoes off anyone Cantonese. And when I tell the French in perfect French that I don't speak French, they invariably glare at me and reply "Of course, you do." Then again, that may just be the French...

HUGS FOR HAITI!!!! (Another good reason to learn French!)

Who dares to do that nowadays? I rather enjoyed the abstinence. In fact, I'm thinking of doing it more regularly. Four years ago, I only used my computer to write. Thank God for You Tube. How on earth did I live without it? The Carpenters songs nurtured me throughout my childhood. Haven't heard them for ages--until today.Yay!

Anyway, yesterday I thought I was going to blog about going to Norway. Then my Canadian immigration application turned up. Ha! It never rains but it pours. Opportunities galore! I have no clue where I'll go next or what I'll do. But there's a lesson or few in this.

Firstly, stay the course. Do what you have to do as best you can and work towards your bigger dreams. Just when you think things may never work out, that's when something pans out. I think an optimistic spirit of acceptance helps most. I put in my order for Canada, did what I had to do and moved on cheerfully.

Maybe both are possible. Canada and Norway both hold similar appeal. And when the climate changes intensify, up north will likely be better than the hot spots of the current world. I say this only half in jest.

Life sometimes takes turns we don't expect. Whee! What a ride. Heh! Hugs for Haiti. Yay!

The optimist's creed gave me something to think about every day. Something to blog about, moreover. I have a new theme, but before I jump right into it, today feels like a good day simply to enjoy the silence, the break between the goals and the striving. Yay!

I am grateful for my life.
Hugs for Haiti.Marie Dixon Frischhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14847100396891455607noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7253173705978194838.post-65093376875859359022010-03-26T08:51:00.005-05:002010-03-29T00:40:03.881-05:00Creed XII/ Eid XIIPromise yourself to live in the faith that the whole world is on your side, so long as you are true to the best that is in you.

The end of the creed. It's been an interesting two weeks. I think I'll go over some of the points again. But the effect of optimism is clear. My life took on a new glow with an optimistic attitude. And I shared the creed with a lot of people in my classes. We chomped over it, debated it.

In the end, it doesn't matter what I think and say, it's what I do that counts. Hugs for Haiti.
