Force/ Gezwungen

"You have to be hospitalised immediately. Your blood test results are terrible." The voice of the doctor crackled on my mobile phone.

"No way," I responded just as firmly. I was in the middle of doing my taxes. Into my productive and hopeful Friday morning came the thunderbolt of this judgement.

My blood levels haven't been normal for years. And the last place I need to be is in hospital, where they have access to ever more sophisticated investigations and exotic resistant bugs that my "low" white cell count might leave me vulnerable to. They would kill me. They would bleed me to death, poke, prod, tweak and tug at me until the fragile thread broke.

I know! Been there, done that, learned all the insider tricks and experienced them first hand from both sides. One reason I gave up medicine was that the overwhelming force of system makes it hard to stand up for individual rights. But those are what I must strive for. For myself and others, as far as I can. Hugs for Haiti!

One is forced to conform to the norm. But variation is the stuff of innovation and evolution. It is my duty to be different, though basically the same. I may be powerless to resist forced hospitalisation, imprisonment, or whatever else greater powers might force on me. But they can't force me to believe in what they do or be like them. My mind is force-free. Yipee!

Idiot

Good word, "idiot". It's the same in German and English. It was only when I heard an older woman hiss it to herself yesterday that I realised I haven't used it for a while. I used to use it constantly. Mostly in negative self talk like that elderly woman.

She stopped in the middle of the street to berate herself, or some absent person, for something he or she had done, presumably at some time , anywhere from a minute to 70-80 years past, from the look of her. It might have been senility, I reasoned, once I had ascertained that she wasn't addressing me.

Or just the plain ole everyday human madness of habitually putting ourselves and others down. Whatever. I appreciated the brief, spontaneuos glimpse of her subconscious mind. It made me realise all that negative self talk has been absent from my mind for quite some time. Yay!!! True progress lies in the silence.

Was war denn los? Scheinbar nichts.

Hugs for Haiti.

My life is a mixture of practical, hands-on progression and mystical, spirutual events. One side of me embraces cognitive behavioural science and is good at applying it. The other side opens itself to the whims of God, the Universe or that unknown, indefinable reality that informs and moulds the passage of life.

A book by Püttjer and Schnierda, German employment experts, helped me review my professional profile and appreciate the value of my life experience. I reviewed my strengths--and weaknesses, to a lesser extent--with evidence-based, concrete examples from my work history. The evidence is irrefutable: I have done and can do a lot!

An essay from SelfGrowth.com on messages from a goddess channelled by someone named Lena Lees inspired me to marvel about life. With the attitude of an appreciative observer, I immediately found more inner peace and joy. The combination of the practical-concrete and the mystical-spiritual input have blown my mind, yet again.

I have a really strong mind. It's good when it gets blown ever so often. Because, despite its merits, my mind is limited and limiting. When I let it go (Puff, or boom, depending on the circumstances) I catch a glimpse of wondrous possibilities. And I become more of what I have the potential to be: divine!

Hurra! (Gottseidank geht zumindest das auf gut Deutsch)

Eureka!

Hugs for Haiti!

I've had a Eureka moment this morning. Actually, it's the result of a process coming together, lots of little steps, faithfully followed, have brought me here. But that's a whole story, at least a book or two.

How to put into words the essence of what I have seen?

I have a dream. It is my task to help people adjust to the increased mobility and migration pressures that lie ahead. I think we are being prepared. At least, I have been preparing. I don't know its nature, or when it will happen, but I sense our world is approaching a quantum leap of radical proportions.

One of the things I can do is help people, children primarily, gear themselves for such change, find the resources to approach it humbly and deal with it masterfully. That's what my life has been about. It sounds simple, trivial, maybe even weird, but I have been moving around for decades, centuries, millenia even, if you count the 2000 jump. And I know a thing or few about adaptation. Yay! Hurray for the human race!

Glaubt mir! Oder nicht, es ist auch egal. Schönen Tag Welt!

Jobsuche/ On Work

I had the chance to sit in on a job interview as a passionate observer recently. Unaffected by the proceedings, I absorbed the subtle clues of human interaction that reveal so much. It was fascinating.

I knew the jobseeker would not be hired. I also recognised that this was not a bad thing. He wasn't the right man for the job and the company was not the right place for him. That's the whole point of job interviews: to check if something that seems right really is.

And it's perfectly fine to admit that the answer is no.

Often, we label misfits as failures, take rejection hard. But life--and work--is a constant process of trying and adjusting, changing and growing. We can't do everything. So why not be grateful for the better fit that's coming, instead of regretting the wrong thing that passed by? Not landing in the wrong place is as much a success as being in the right one.

Failures are just the dry runs on the way to success. I take them in stride and learn from them, glad for the chance to try something new for a while. Hugs for Haiti!

We left Hamburg in a rain cloud to soar in the sunshine on the way to Amsterdam. Holland was grey and wet, too. But as we crossed the North Sea, it was sunny ahead. We landed in Stavanger for the first time with warmer weather than we had left behind.

In the first awkward moments of getting to know the place, we couldn't find a parking space. Eventually we pulled into a parking lot. But we had no coins for the meter. Fan walked a few steps and found ten Kroner on the ground which covered parking for two hours.

Did we just get lucky, or did we make our own luck? Success gurus suggest luck is our own making. I like to believe that. It makes it easier to accept whatever luck brings, good or bad. It's up to me how I take life, or make it. And even the weather is feedback on where I'm at. We had a whole week of sunshine in Norway. A good omen!

Every ray of sunshine is joy, each drop of rain a boon. Hugs for Haiti.

Manche Leute sagen, man sieht und erlebt, was man sehen und erleben will.

Hurra!

Sickie/ krank

Life runs in cycles. At least mine does. And I've just had another bout of sickness. I have nothing against sickness. I earned a good living from it once upon a time. But my head used to be set on resisting and resenting sickness as an opponent, a rival for my territory.

When Fan got it, I looked at him darkly. I didn't want to catch it, but my mind was too cluttered and busy to counter the bug. Fan looked almost pleased when I finally succumbed. He seemed to need me to share what he felt.

He stayed home from work because his health insurance allowed it. I kept working because I always work at home and went out to work because I don't get paid if I don't. But going out helped. It took me out of the sick house. Students offered distraction and throat lozenges, laughter and fulfilment.

I'm better now. Not completely, but I'm grateful for the lessons from this bout of illness: the passing of dark thoughts and angry attitudes, the adding of another strain of bacteria to my internal flora club, and altogether for the miracle of life, love, health and healing.

I have learned to be nicer to myself, to cough more gently, to blow my nose softly (I was a huge honker before). Even at this age, habits can change. This cold has been another down step on the journey, but I'm grateful for every step of the way.
Hugs for Haiti.

Hurra!

Clutter/ Zeugs

Yesterday afternoon a bird zoomed by so fast I heard the woosh of its wings like a fighter plane. As it rounded the corner I could just make out its peachy brown body as a dot on the horizon.

Was it hunting, or being hunted? I've never heard a wing on the wind quite like that. Maybe it was flying fast for the thrill of it.

I keep reading messages about clutter. All the gurus are suggesting spring cleaning. I know I need to do it. More than that, I long to keep myself clear in body mind and soul. Longterm. I can tell a new life is waiting for me as soon as I take care of the old stuff.

So I've tossed out a lot of the papers I collected over two years of English teaching. I'm passing them on to colleagues if anyone wants them. And we've taken out bags of clothes we no longer needed. I'm streamlining my life, slowly but surely. Maybe I can fly better that way. Not because someone tells me to, but just for the thrill of it.
Hugs for Haiti.

Hurra!
