Magersucht

Germans call anorexia nervosa "Magersucht" literally translated it means addiction to thinness, or something like that. My stepdaughter has it. That means our family has it. It's a fascinating illness, so sneaky and pervasive, but I love it.

I know, I'm perverse. But it gives us a chance to look at the reasons for its existence. And maybe do something about them.

The caring, loving father, absolutely crazy about his daughter, the jealous mother excluded from the erotic triangle while the daughter pulls the strings...It's a masterpiece of family drama. But I stepped outside to get some air and I'm bigger than the scene now.

Bring it on, Magersucht. I'm feeling lucky today. ha!
Hugs for Haiti.

Hurra! Wir schaffen das. Gemeinsam sind wir unschlagbar.

Magersucht roll over! Ha.

Tochter

A walk clears my mind. There's not much there anyway. After all the anticipation, the long awaited daughter's here. Yay!

Die Tochter ist da. Hurra!

Patch

I seldom read my own blog. Or anyone else's for that matter. But today I looked back at the first entry of the month, just to see where I was coming from. I started February on relationship, about the role spouses play in each other's lives. I'm ending the with family because Fan's daughter is coming to visit today.

It wasn't easy. His mother was dead set against it and poisoned his mind against his daughter because...I'm not exactly sure why. But he is a grown man and responsible for his own decisions. After all, it wasn't the girl who got her mom pregnant...

Now there's just the excitement of anticipation as we move into a new dimension of family life. It's like growing up some more. Heh.
Hugs for Haiti.

Hugs for Haiti!

Two participants had a spat. One participant disagreed with what her small group was doing. I did some mediation in the break and learned some interesting things about how the two women perceived the world--very differently.

We're building a team. That was the way one participant summed up what was happening in class yesterday. It was a perfect sentence from someone who often stumbles over word order and form. My enthusiasm overflowed and stopped further comments. But it was okay.

In the silence that followed, we all felt the truth of what the woman had said. And it was good.

Jeg heter...

Learning a new language is fantastic. Funny how human beings all say the same things. The first lesson of French, Spanish, Croatian, and German, of course, consisted of the typical "I am..." and "you?"

I did have a wicked friend from Singapore who taught me an insult and claimed it was a greeting. It shocked the groin off the guy from Hong Kong when I rattled it off (my Cantonese intonation is perfect, even tho I had no clue what I was saying). And a Brazilian friend taught me a mournful folk song, a Nepalese friend, no clue what the song means, I've forgotten.

The deepest was the Hungarian love song another friend taught me. I sang it for the woman whose house I stayed in when I went to Sopron 25 years ago. She was enthused.

Sometimes it's not what we say, but how we say it.
Hugs for Haiti.

Ha! Freude herrscht in meinem Herzen.

Hugs for Haiti!

My husband's long lost daughter showed up last week--per email. She'd been looking for him for a while it seems, so maybe he was the one who was lost. Whatever. Now there's hope for family healing. There are lots of wounds. He's as ravaged as any soldier from Afghanistan or Iraq emotionally. Family can do that to you.

Yet there's room for forgiveness, acceptance and love, too. He says hope dies last. I say love never does.

Superwoman/ Heldin

The other day I did a presentation with a woman who rocks. She tossed a powerpoint together in zero time. She pushed the agenda through, got copies of the worksheets done, even skipped the first day of her Master's course to be at the meeting.

Her eyes had deep rings, her face was badly scarred from a recent accident and she has work obligations up to her ears--no, probably over her head.

I was like that once. Never in over my head; I was too careful about keeping deadlines and such to take on too much. But I took on everything I could. I burned myself up, but I didn't burn out. What remained at the end was a tiny spark of life. Barely there, a precious flame. The source.

Now I take it easy; I'm careful about me. I would tell her where she's headed, except that kind of recognition must come from within. Some of us need to go to extremes, to taste the very edge of death (and I mean the far end) before we know what life means.

And that's fine. A woman's gotta do what a woman's gotta do. I'll hang out in the background and be her friend. Give a hand when she needs one (which she will very soon), and catch her, if I can, when she falls. But even if I don't do it, someone else will. Because she's precious. And God takes care of her own.

Hugs for Haiti!

Curve/ Die Kurve

Whatever the reason for my prolonged encounter with the dental surgeon and his staff, we've made the curve together. On my last visit, I was smiling. Broadly. No pain! Sometimes getting rid of a pain is better than never having pain at all. You don't know what you're missing, if you're always pain-free.

It was the pain that made me conscious that my teeth have feelings. Once the nerve was properly treated, it shut up. I am sooo grateful for a functioning oral cavity, I hope I never forget the experience. I'll never take my teeth for granted again. At least, not for a while.

Last night I shared information about the Lifelong Learning Programme and my Grundtvig experience. Yay! Afterwards, some English colleagues described how Germany has killed their spark, or seriously dampened it.

For many of us, working is a pain. We only do it because we love what we do, need the money, or find purpose in our tasks. The German system discourages people who work by undervaluing and overtaxing their work. It's a pain. But maybe this too can change?

Hugs for Haiti. And for Germany, too.

Heh!

Trost/ Comfort

I overslept. Got up at six instead of five, but boy does the extra hour feel good. My mind's groggy, but it'll feel refreshed in a second or two. My body needs movement, a walk to the river perhaps. I'll slip into another life as the writing fiend takes over from the teacher type.

One of my "aunts" wrote to thank me for the condolences I sent when her husband died six months ago. I asked her if I could do anything. She replied that a letter now and then would be great. She says she loves the way I write.

It's an honour to be able to serve with my passion. Writing is a balm for the soul, my own and others. My ambition: to write to change my world. Inschallah.

Hugs for Haiti ...

Better/ besser

Hugs for Haiti!

I'm healing. My jaw's still swollen, but this time there's much less pain. It's like the jealousy thing. Some deep-seated fears and hurts are difficult to deal with. But when you face them head on with patience and loving kindness, it works.

The wounds are still there, but they're no longer unbearable. In fact, it's thrilling to feel them slowly getting better. What a wondrous way life works!

Hurra!

Revision

My jaw was still fat. It made a good clownface, having a crooked jaw. But the pain was disturbing. So I went back to check it out. The dental assistant did a minimal intervention. When the dental surgeon examined it, he said my wound healing was awry.

I wonder why? No doubt my subconscious put into action what his subconscious was saying all the time: it couldn't turn out right. This time I asked him to give me a positive picture of how it should be before he put a hand to my mouth.

It hurt when he anaesthetised me. Flashes of electricity and heat jolted me out of the chair. Amazing how nerves produce sensations. It's not the outer stimulus that matters so much as how the nerve responds. I cried. Couldn't help myself a bit of self pity.

Then I stared out the window for a while until I found the best attitude I could muster. And now I'm putting healing thoughts into action full gear. Hurray! Healing is not always easy or painless, but at least I'm on the way.

Hugs for Haiti!

Faslam

Every now and then it's good to do something different, go somewhere new. We visited a village in the Lüneburger Heide and met interesting people with remarkable similarities and a like-minded attitude to the world.

We passed a tractor with a sombrero pulling a wagon full of blonde poncho bearers with fake black moustaches. And a Flinstones wagon with hanging bones. I didn't even know the festival existed, a sort of northern German edition of Carneval. You live and learn. As long as you keep your eyes, mind and heart open, there's no end to what you might discover.

Melt/ Geschmolzen

There are different ways to get rid of ice. You can hack at it with a pick, roll over it with an ice breaker or put a flame to it and let it melt. Jealousy works the same way.

Yesterday's blog opened the tightness around my jealous feeling. Some of the tension seeped away. Then I put the candle of self love to it and slowly, the brittle green feeling melted. It's not gone completely, but I'm comfortable with it now. And confident it will get less in time.

An astrology.com special popped up in my inbox: "Are you competing for his affection?" It listed warning signs like excessive voicemail or email contact, a partner being nonchalant about insecurities regarding his ex, and friends' comments thatr reveal he's been seen straying...We have none of that. Nowhere near it. He cares.

Yes, she sent him a long reading from some website she favours. Yes, they made plans for a double date without consulting me. But we're planning our future together and taking the steps to create it.

There's no competition. There's room in someone's heart for lots of lovers and beloveds. Jealousy is superfluous when abundance takes its place.

Hurra!

Hugs for Haiti!

First love/ Herzschmerz

This is not the sort of thing you blog about, or is it?

What the heck, I spare no-one else, why should I spare myself ? I am jealous. My husband met his first love again after many years. He stayed on an extra day of his trip, arranged the date, then told me where he would be.

I knew in my heart he was going to do it. And it made me uneasy. What if he betrayed me? He didn't technically do anything like sleep with her. They chatted for three hours and he went home to his mother's place. He phoned me when he left the restaurant.

He has been gentle about it. And I think honest. But he keeps making comments, bringing up things she said. Things suddenly sound so precious when they come from her. I can't compete with the shadow of his first love.

Maybe I don't have to. Maybe I need to give him room to cherish her without fear of loss and betrayal.

"If you love something, let it go. If it comes back to you, it's yours, if it doesn't, it never was". I heard that saying years ago, but don't agree completely. I never truly own anything. I can hold on to things for a while. But in the end, everything passes, as do I. So why worry about what isn't? Or even about what is?

Hugs for Haiti!

Quick fix/ Schnell

Hugs for Haiti!

The other side of procrastination is rapid response. There are some things that can't wait, or won't. There are times when I act in the moment, out of the moment, without doubt or hesitation.

These times are rare. I don't have the energy to be quick all the time. And anyway, I am a slow poke, dreaming and procrastinating, weighing things carefully, leaving a lot of stuff undone. But not in a bad way. Many things never need to be done. I don't have to do everything that comes into my head--or anyone else's.

(Don't put off for tomorrow what can be put off forever)

I love it when a thing gets done almost by itself because it simply demands action. Like an arrow flying straight to its target. Phoom. Bull's eye! Or a snakehead snapping out at it's prey.

A variation on the Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to wait on things that don't have to be done, the strength to do what's necessary and the wisdom to know the difference.

In Waiting/ Wartezeit

Procrastination has a bad name, but it's no thief. It's a lender of time. I procrastinate. A lot. But instead of calling it that, I call it waiting. What a difference a twist of terminology can make.

If you procrastinate, you're bad, you're lazy, you're self-destructive, sabotaging, etc. All the success gurus preach against it. But waiting is another story. Waiting makes you patient. And sometimes saves energy that might be wasted doing unnecessary things.

I don't need to do everything that occurs to me. Waiting gives others a chance to do them. Some things turn out to be a bad idea. Then I'm glad I waited. I can wait years for the right time, decades for the right thing. Yet, when the moment is right, things happen instantaneously with little effort on my part and hardly any duration of time.

Time to dream, time to rest, time to let things work themselves out; sometimes we have more time than we think, if only we would take it.
Hugs for Haiti!

In Deutschland wird die Man~ana-Mentalität belächelt. Die Deutschen seien nicht so, meint man. Schade.

Daily Blog/ Bloggen

There's something to be said for the force of habit. It is easier to get things done when they become routine. Although I have no real obligation to write this blog, it has become a habit. Yet, I have freedom of choice, too.

Yesterday I went off and did a wellness day, sauna, massage, the works. And it felt great to let routine melt away, without guilt or regret. Today it's back to the blog.

After every break in the routine, I return to it with fresh eyes, with more respect and with love. Because I have grown to love my daily blog more than fresh bread. So give us this day our daily blog and forgive the days I let it slide. There's always a good reason why.

Woman/ Frau

Yesterday, I opened an email from an old friend, i.e. friend for 27 years, going 28. She hates it when I tell people that, pretends we met in kindergarten. She's sensitive about our age. But heck, it's the truth, we're getting on.

Anyway, she sent a chain letter for women. I really hate those things, especially the ones that threaten with bad luck. I never send those ones on. I figure the buck stops with me and I'll face whatever luck may come.

But this one is worth sharing. Here's to all the women who have touched my life. As you know from the thank count, there've been thousands!

May there be peace within today.
May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be.
May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others.
May you use the gifts you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you.
May you be content within yourself just the way you are.
Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and every one of us.

(Then followed the bit about pass this on to twelve friends, don't break chain, hope you made a wish, see what happens in four days, etc...)

Hurra!

Carpe diem

Husband's away, it's time to play. Yay! It's not that I don't love him. Quite the contrary, the longer we live together the deeper my appreciation of his true nature. And he's a good guy. But the freedom to order my life just as I want it with no regard for anyone else is a rare gift. And I'm seizing it for what it's worth.

No time for long blogging today, the burning inspiration from a sleepless night require action. Tell you about it later. Bye

Hugs for Haiti!

Hurra!

Inschallah

One of my favourite writing mentors, Hope Clarke of Funds for Writers, had an inspiring editorial in one of her newsletter the other day. She reminded us to write not for ourselves, but for our readers. I wrote back to thank her for the inspiring message.

She replied to thank me for writing her. She had thought the editorial was nothing special that week. Which goes to show, you never know how your words will affect someone.

Sometimes I write for myself. It's my blog and I'm allowed. Sometimes I don't know who I'm writing for, or why. But if I let the message flow, something good comes out, or it may be something that doesn't seem particularly good to me, but perhaps for someone else. Inschallah!
Hugs for Haiti :-)

So Gott will heißt Inschallah, glaube ich.

Influence/ Einfluss

Yesterday, my husband remarked that living with me is like having a corset, there are so many things he can't do. It's true. I was sent to be his conscience, to help him rewrite a life gone awry. To cover his back while he carves out a new reality.

And he was sent to loosen me up and goad me. He has a tough job of it, I can tell you. Ornery, stubborn, contrary, I'm all that and more. Yet, when I am convinced by his point of view--and it doesn't need to be dramatic--there's no-one more pliable and adaptable than I. Change is instantaneous.

So together we create a whole new way of being. It's not just compromise, it's about being convinced, really seeing things--especially yourself--through another person's eyes. And laughing. A lot. Thank goodness for relationships.

Hugs for Haiti!
